A man in drag poses wearing a short dress and large bow tie-shaped head garment. Photographic postcard, 192-.
With best love xxxx Maisie
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photographs of military, naval, and prisoner-of-war camp drag.
The man in drag lifts up one side of his dress, looking intensely at the viewer. Unidentified drag performer, early 1920s, almost certainly a member of the 'Splinters' troupe of ex-servicemen, who, having gained experience acting in drag with World War I concert parties, organized themselves into a commercial act and enjoyed great success performing at music hall well into the 1930s (cf. Wellcome Library no. 2043484i)
