Digital Transgender Archive
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
Print catalogued bears on the recto an inscription hand-written in ink "Mrs Avis yours truly Fred Spencer 1927". The British music hall comedian Fred Spencer (fl. 1880-after 1949) was a much-loved pantomime dame for three generations, shown here out of costume. His roles, as Widow Twanky, Jack's mother in Jack and the beanstalk, and the wicked stepmother in Cinderella, were all pretty much interchangeable, and designed to aid as much as possible the physical comedy of his performances
