Digital Transgender Archive
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
The female impersonator Malcolm Scott (1872-1929), here not in drag but smartly dressed as a man with a hat and cigarette; standing with his hands in his pockets against a painted studio backdrop. Scott's impersonations of famous female figures from history and popular culture were a big draw at major music halls in the days before World War I. His 'homely' appearance made him a good pantomime Dame, but he would also burlesqe some of the great beauties of the day
