Dr. Aren Aizura is an Assistant Professor at University of Minnesota in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, who primarily works in the field of transgender studies. Originally born in Melbourne, Australia, Aizura moved to the United States about seven years ago and identifies as a trans guy. In this oral history, Aizura describes his experience of coming out; researching and teaching in the field of transgender studies; the issues around respectability politics; his experiences with getting access to healthcare; and his perspectives on academia vs. lived experiences and why we should listen to and uplift voices who need it most. Aizura describes his hopes for the future for trans communities and details the need for racial and economic justice along with the fight for trans justice.
