Digital Transgender Archive
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
Jack Brown, in drag, is dancing with his partner, Charles Gregory, holding an umbrella; Gregory wears a top hat and smart attire. His cane leans against the painted backdrop. This offset litho printed card would indicate that the image was sufficiently popular to be produced in large quantities. Brown and Gregory performed the Cake-Walk, a very popular dance, as part of “Les Joyeux Nègres"at the Nouveau Cirque in Paris from 1902-1903.
